In Karlstad, global climate and environmental issues shall have the highest priority and permeate all decisions/ activities.
Climate improvements are a prerequisite for the survival of the planet and thus future generations. Climate consequences must be clarified in the municipality’s comprehensive plans.

In terms of the environment and climate, Karlstad shall be a pioneer municipality for transition according to the Paris Agreement, where the preservation of biodiversity and healthy ecosystems characterizes the sustainable use of our natural resources by karlstad residents and the municipality. This means a sustainable economy that does not eat away at ecological systems. The transition to a circular economy and supporting activities that contribute to a transition to a circular economy are an important part of a sustainable economy.

• provide charging opportunities for electric cars when planning districts and new construction
• put solar cells on municipally owned roofs and in new construction
• prioritize public transport and bike lanes over private car use within the urban area
• develop the trade area we already have, rather than build new ones
• ensure the airport should only be used for medical care and national preparedness
• create an oasis for biodiversity and a learning center on Skutberget for cropping systems that create good harvests while contributing to good climate effects
• support urban farming in the form of allotments
• ensure that climate effects should be taken into account in procurement
• preserve and develop the municipality’s green areas
• ensure that lawns on municipally owned land can be replaced with meadows to benefit biodiversity
• preserve arable land for the possibility of locally grown
